Karachi Dairy Farmers Advocate for Rs300/Litre Milk Price Fixation

KARACHI: Dairy and cattle farmers in Karachi are pushing for a substantial hike in the milk price, proposing an additional Rs80 per liter.

Dairy and cattle farmers in Karachi are seeking a significant increase in the price of milk, previously agreed upon at Rs220 per liter until December 2024. Now, they are pushing to overturn this agreement and establish a new rate of Rs300 per liter. The farmers’ association has formally submitted their proposal to the Karachi Commissioner, requesting an official notification to implement the price hike.

According to reports, the dairy and cattle farmers are advocating for swift action to adjust the milk price amidst economic challenges. They emphasize the need for an updated pricing policy to sustain their livelihoods effectively.

Driven by escalating costs in dairy farming such as feed, maintenance, and transportation, Karachi’s dairy and cattle farmers are confronting profitability challenges. The recent increase in milk prices is viewed as essential to sustain their operations and meet market demands effectively.

Commissioner Karachi recently announced a revised pricing structure following consultations with the dairy farmers association. As per the latest notification, the retail price of milk has been set at Rs 220 per liter, reflecting a Rs 20 per liter increase. Additionally, wholesale and dairy farmer prices have been fixed at Rs 205 and Rs 195 per liter respectively.

This adjustment aims to alleviate the financial pressures faced by dairy farmers, enabling them to maintain sustainable practices amid economic uncertainties.
