Hafiz Naeem Describes Supreme Court Ruling as a Breath of Fresh Air

LAHORE: Jamaat-e-Islami’s Ameer has referred to the Supreme Court’s ruling in the special seats case as a refreshing change in the current political climate.

Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman, speaking to the media, called for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner and all relevant officials following the Supreme Court’s recent ruling. He urged political parties that operate on both sides of the political spectrum to fully accept the apex court’s decision.

The Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) leader also advocated for comprehensive electoral reforms. Regarding local governance, he emphasized the need to address local governments similarly to federal and provincial administrations.

Naeem stressed the importance of accepting the Supreme Court’s decision in its entirety, while requesting the formation of a judicial commission to oversee the election process. He criticized dynastic politics, labeling it a “murder of democracy.”

The Supreme Court recently overturned the denial of reserved seats to the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Justice Mansoor Ali Shah announced the 8-5 split verdict on a petition filed by the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC), a PTI ally. Other judges in favor of the majority ruling included Justice Athar Minallah, Justice Shahid Waheed, Justice Muneeb Akhtar, Justice Muhammad Ali Mazhar, Justice Ayesha Malik, Justice Syed Hassan Azhar Rizvi, and Justice Irfan Saadat Khan. Additionally, the top court nullified the Peshawar High Court’s order that had upheld the Election Commission of Pakistan’s (ECP) earlier decision.
